About Craft and Yap ATX

Craft and Yap ATX runs group craft nights in Austin where people paint, make things, and talk to each other. That last part is the whole point. The name says it: you craft, and you yap.

Their events pair hands-on creative projects with guided meditation. "Spring Expression: Guided Meditation & Painting" is a good example of what they do. You sit down, someone walks you through a meditation, and then you paint. Supplies are provided. There's a step-by-step guide if you need one, so nobody has to stare at a blank canvas wondering what they're doing wrong.

The vibe leans more house party than workshop. A DJ plays sets during the events. Complimentary drinks are on the table when you show up, and they encourage you to bring your own too. BYOB, bring your own snacks, bring whatever. Their own language for this is "BYOB/Byosnackies welcome," which tells you most of what you need to know about the energy in the room.

Craft and Yap ATX says their mission is to build community through creativity. That's a simple idea, and they keep the execution simple too. No lengthy artist bios on the website, no philosophy page, no multi-tier pricing. Their main online presence is their Instagram account (@CraftandYap_ATX), where they post photos from past events so you can see what you're getting into before you commit. If you want to know what the room looks like, who shows up, and what people actually make, that's where to look.

The meditation part matters more than you might expect. This isn't a paint-and-sip where someone throws on a Spotify playlist and calls it a night. Starting with guided meditation before picking up a brush changes the feel of the whole event. It slows people down. It gives the creative part of the evening a different starting point than "I just got off work and I'm stressed." Whether the meditation is the draw or the painting is probably depends on the person, but the combination is what makes Craft and Yap ATX different from the dozen other group art experiences around Austin.

They keep things loose. You don't need to know how to paint. You don't need to have meditated before. You show up, someone hands you supplies, walks you through it, and there's music and drinks. The barrier to showing up is basically nothing, which is probably why their events pull in people who wouldn't normally sign up for either a meditation class or a painting class on their own.
