EMBODIED DANCE | MOVE TO HEAL

Hosted by Betsy Fowler

A space for permission to feel, process, and express through somatic movement, breath, and expressive dance.

We live in a culture that encourages suppression and numbing vs. feeling and expressing. Most of us have learned to push through, manage, and override what we are truly feeling and what the body is telling us.

Embodied Dance is a movement space that invites you to feel, process, and express through the body. We will create a safe container to move with intention, both through guided-movement and free expression. Through somatic movement, breath, and expressive dance, we'll use the body's own intelligence to shift out of stress and suppression and into presence and regulation.

This is a safe space to:

Build a deep inner-connection with yourself.

Build self-trust, self-appreciation, self-compassion.

Have an outlet for releasing tension, stress, and stuck energy. To let go and flow.

Let your body be free to feel, move, and express, be in your authentic flow.

Cultivate joy, freedom, and fun.

This is somatic movement — movement that comes from sensation and feeling rather than choreography or performance.

Coming Home is the theme of this month for Move To Heal: A somatic movement space that supports healing the nervous system and feeling through movement. This month we start at the beginning: safety, presence, and coming back home to your body.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND EMOTIONAL REGULATION:

We are taught to ignore our emotions and feelings, that they are too intense, irrational, or inconvenient. Modern life often rewards productivity, composure, and efficiency. Emotional processing, however, requires time and attention—resources that many people feel they cannot afford. As a result, people may push emotions aside in order to maintain performance, meet deadlines, or avoid uncomfortable conversations. While this strategy may work temporarily, suppressed emotions accumulate beneath the surface.

Emotions are not purely psychological experiences. They involve complex interactions between the brain, nervous system, hormones, and body.

Repressed emotions often keep the body in a sustained state of stress which leads to a state of chronic sympathetic nervous system activation (fight/flight response), not allowing the body and nervous system to return to its normal state of regulation and balance. Over time, the body internalises what the mind avoids.

This state of sustained state of stress can lead to a compromised immune system, sleep disruptions, digestive issues, chronic muscle tension and pain, chronic fatigue, chronic anxiety or depression, or, burnout.

Emotions are an integral part of human experience, providing insight into our needs, values, and relationships. They provide information about our experiences, motivate our decisions, and help us connect with others. Our emotions hold power. The power of love, empathy, grief, anger, and joy. When we feel our emotions and process our emotions in safe ways, we have more access to our life force and our inner power.

The nervous system has a normal arc of stress activation- Activation, peak, resolution, recovery. Mobilize energy fast, survive an acute threat, and return to baseline. So many times in our modern world, we live with constant stress without having the time to release and come back to a regulated state.

This space invites you to release incomplete stress cycles in the body. When the body is given permission to complete the stress cycle — through shaking, intentional movement, sound, or breath — the nervous system receives the signal to come back into a regulated state (safety state).
