Ryoanji: A Live Musical Event

Hosted by Austin Zen Center

Experience a live performance of John Cage's "Ryoanji" β€” a contemplative musical composition inspired by the famous Zen rock garden at Ryoan-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan. The piece will be performed by Dr. Michael Martinez and members of the Austin Zen Center sangha.

John Cage's "Ryoanji" is a series of compositions that translate the placement of rocks in the iconic Zen garden into musical notation. The result is a meditative, spare, and deeply contemplative sonic experience that bridges Eastern philosophy and Western avant-garde music.

The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the performers. This event is free and open to all β€” no prior experience with Zen or contemporary music is required. Come experience the intersection of meditation, art, and sound in a sacred space.
